London, UK – 8th May 2006 - Symbian Limited today welcomed BT's announcement that it has joined the Symbian Platinum Program to support the growing market for phones based on Symbian OS™. As a Platinum Partner, BT will harness the opportunities of being able to rapidly develop converged services for its customers using Symbian OS phones.
Symbian develops and licenses Symbian OS, the operating system that powers today’s most popular smartphones. Symbian OS is licensed by the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturers and to date, as of Q4 2005 almost 60 million phones based on Symbian OS have shipped worldwide to over 250 major network operators.
Symbian OS phones are growing in popularity. During 2005, Symbian OS phone shipments grew more than 136% compared to the previous year. According to technology analyst firm Gartner, by the end of 2006 global smartphone sales will reach 87m with Symbian OS owning 83% of the market share at 72 million units.
