Intel and Symbian demonstrate 3G reference design for Symbian Os

The Symbian Smartphone Show, London, October 11th 2005 - Intel Corporation and Symbian Limited will demonstrate a 3G reference design for Symbian OS for the first time at The Symbian Smartphone Show in London today. This demonstration represents a key milestone in the companies’ collaboration to create a cost-effective, feature-rich platform for 3G smartphones.

This investment in a 3G reference platform is the first to be announced using Symbian OS™ v9 and Intel XScale® technology. The platform demonstrates multimedia functionality and includes key software and hardware components that will ultimately enable handset manufacturers to deliver solutions for different mobile phone segments. The design will also help reduce development time for new phones.

Intel
“Intel continues to focus on bringing new applications and exciting features to the smartphone market segment,” said Sam Arditi, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Cellular and Handheld Group. “Working with Symbian Intel will enable handset manufacturers to bring Symbian OS- based devices to market and provide the compelling tools to deliver on the promise of 3G.”

Symbian
“This is a milestone in the commercial development of a 3G reference platform. The commercialized platform will ultimately be a major catalyst in bringing cost-effective Symbian OS-based 3G phones to the mass market,” said Jørgen Behrens, vice president of product management and strategy, Symbian. “By combining the flexibility of Symbian OS with Intel’s XScale technology, both operators and handset manufacturers will benefit from faster time to market and the best-in-class, feature-rich phones to help drive consumer take-up of network operator services and content.”
