Telefónica Móviles España and Symbian collaborate to support developer community

Telefónica Móviles España endorses Symbian Signed Program

The Symbian Smartphone Show, London, UK, October 11th 2005 - At The Smartphone Show today, Symbian Limited and Telefónica Móviles España announced that the operator is endorsing the Symbian Signed Program by mandating that all Symbian OS™ applications delivered through its channels must have successfully completed the Symbian Signed application signing process.

Symbian Signed is an industry-wide initiative led by Symbian that meets the market need for a flexible generic certification program for Symbian OS mobile applications.
The program uses a range of test criteria defined in co-operation with key industry stakeholders to set a standard for application development on Symbian OS and is gaining widespread market adoption amongst phone makers, mobile operators, developers and application portals. A key example that Symbian Signed continues to gain industry momentum is the recommendation by GSMA MAS (Mobile Application Security Initiative) that its members implement the program.

Carlos Melendo, Handset & Smartcards Senior Manager for Telefónica Móviles España, said: "By supporting the Symbian Signed Program, Telefónica Móviles España will require that all applications are Symbian Signed as a prerequisite for distribution through our channels. Symbian Signed offers an excellent mechanism to build in traceability of applications to their source, removing the 'application source untrusted dialog', and raising the quality of applications for Symbian OS handsets".

Simon Garth, VP Marketing Symbian, said: "We are delighted that Telefónica Móviles España has chosen to fully adopt Symbian Signed for all applications sold though their channels. The program enables network operators such as Telefónica Móviles España to reduce both time and cost of bringing powerful Symbian OS mobile applications to a fast growing smartphone market."

Open OS phones such as those based on Symbian OS are growing in popularity. As of Q2 2005, cumulative shipments of Symbian OS phones reached almost 40 million and year on year phone shipments grew more than 190% compared to the same quarter last year.  According to technology analyst firm Canalys, overall global shipments of smartphones are up 105% year on year in Q2 2005 with Symbian OS emerging as the market leader.
