Symbian OS selected as NTT DoCoMo’s common software platform for 3G FOMA handsets

Symbian OS™ to help NTT DoCoMo cut time to market and development time, leveraging track record of 3G smartphone success

TOKYO, Japan and LONDON, United Kingdom, 19 November 2004 – Symbian Limited today announced that Symbian OS™ was selected by NTT DoCoMo, Inc. for the development of a common software platform for FOMA® 3G mobile phones. NTT DoCoMo and Fujitsu Limited have developed the Symbian OS-based common software platform for FOMA in partnership.  The first phone developed on this platform is the newly-announced FOMA F901iC which is part of the new FOMA 901i series. 

Since becoming a Symbian OS licensee, Fujitsu has developed seven Symbian OS-based handsets for NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA service.  By using open standards-based Symbian OS, Fujitsu has achieved rapid time to market and cost-effective development of functionality-rich 3G smartphones.

Symbian OS is the leading OS that powers the world’s most popular smartphones.  As of November 2004, close to 20 million Symbian OS-based phones have shipped worldwide.  There are currently 38 Symbian OS-based phones in development with 10 licensees. 

The following Symbian OS-based handsets are available in Japan:

  • Fujitsu FOMA F880iES ”Raku Raku” Phone
  • Fujitsu FOMA F900iC; FOMA F900iT; FOMA F900i; FOMA F2051 & FOMA F2102V

Publicly announced Symbian OS-based phones in development for the Japanese 3G market include:

  • the FOMA F901iC from the most advanced series of FOMA phones, the F901i series
  • Vodafone launches the 702NK (Nokia 6630) – the first Symbian OS phone for Vodafone KK; first Symbian OS phone from a non-Japanese vendor
  • Motorola’s first phone for NTT DoCoMo is to use Symbian OS
