First smartphone based on Symbian OS v7.0s launched by Nokia

New Nokia 6600 imaging phone is based on Symbian OS v7.0s

London – 17 June 03 - Symbian announced today that the Nokia 6600 launched in Helsinki yesterday is the first phone to be based on the latest release of Symbian OS™, the global open industry standard operating system for advanced mobile phones. The Nokia 6600 also uses the Series 60 terminal software platform.

Symbian OS v7.0s, was announced at Symbian’s Exposium03 in April 2003, demonstrated Symbian’s continued delivery of its technology platform in step with the market and technology needs of Symbian OS licensees and the broader mobile industry.

Symbian OS v7.0s provides significant enhancements in four particular areas:

• Java MIDP 2.0 – Symbian OS v7.0s provides an upgraded Java implementation with Java MIDP v2.0, enabling more capable Java applications than previously e.g. games applications which exploit Bluetooth® wireless technology and messaging capabilities. Also, Symbian OS v7.0s deploys Sun’s new Java virtual machine which gives significant improvements in Java application performance. These enhancements improve the user’s experience of using phones based on Symbian OS as well as encouraging over-the-air download of Java applications offered by network operators and other third parties.
  
  
• Multimedia – In Symbian OS v7.0s, Symbian introduces a new lightweight, multi-threaded multimedia framework (MMF) which enables high-performance audio, video and imaging capabilities for Symbian OS applications. The MMF is designed to meet the needs of high performance media-centric applications such as video players, midi engines and particularly games.
  
  
• Telephony and Networking – Symbian OS advances its market-leading telephony and networking capabilities further by implementing Multiple PDP contexts and a Quality of Service framework in Symbian OS v7.0s.
  Multiple PDP contexts allow users of mobile phones based on Symbian OS v.7.0s to access more than one network service at the same time, for example users can access email whilst simultaneously surfing the web or downloading an application. The new Quality of Service (QoS) framework allows phones based on Symbian OS v7.0s to manage network connections intelligently, ensuring the best possible user experience in any given situation. For example, the phone may provide a high bandwidth guaranteed network connection for browsing and a low priority “best effort” network connection for downloading emails.
  
  
• Languages – Symbian OS v7.0s offers support for languages such as Arabic, Hebrew and Thai.
