Symbian OS powered Sony Ericsson P800 Smartphone to ship in Q3 2002

Multimedia smartphone with built in camera uses Symbian OS v7.0 and UIQ pen-based user interface

London, UK – March 6th 2002 – Symbian today announced that the Sony Ericsson P800 smartphone is the first multimedia smartphone to use Symbian OS v7.0 and the UIQ user interface. Sony Ericsson has indicated that the P800 will be available during Q3 2002.

Symbian OS v.7.0 builds on the advanced technology, open standards support and flexibility of previous Symbian OS versions by integrating full multimedia messaging capabilities, support for IPv6 and MIDP Java, and multimode capabilities, enabling phone manufacturers to rapidly roll out phones on 2.5G and 3G networks. UIQ is a customisable pen-based user interface that runs on top of Symbian OS v.7.0 and is designed for media rich mobile phones.

This will encourage the rapid development of mobile applications and services ready for the scheduled shipping of P800 in Q3, 2002.
