Symbian announces port of 2.5G enabled Symbian OS to Intel StrongARM applications processor

Optimised Intel® StrongARM* SA-1110 platform now ready for reference testing of application software based on the Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture

London, UK - December 12th 2001 - Symbian today announced the port of Symbian OS v6.1 to the Intel® StrongARM* SA-1110 applications processor. The Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor has been optimised for reference testing of applications being developed for Symbian OS phones using the Intel Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA), Intel Corporation's development blueprint for building wireless handheld communications devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities. This port builds on the relationship announced in August when both companies agreed to work to accelerate application development for Symbian OS and Intel PCA-based devices Symbian licensee Psion has already shipped the Psion NetPad, based on Intel SA-1110 running an earlier version of Symbian OS.

"In the rapidly evolving and highly demanding mobile communications environment, developers need to ensure that their software can run efficiently on mobile phones," said Gilles Allain, VP Account Management and Partnerships, Symbian. "This port combines the Intel SA-1110 with the latest version of our advanced, open operating system, enabling developers to rapidly bring to market targeted applications for 'always on' Symbian OS phones."

"Symbian is working closely with leading industry players to create a mass market of voice- and data-enabled mobile phones," said Mark Casey, director of marketing for Intel's Handheld Computing Division. "Wireless and handheld manufacturers that are using the Intel SA-1110 can now utilize the optimised Symbian and Intel technology to take advantage of the resulting performance increase while decreasing power consumption in their systems."

About Intel SA-1110

The Intel SA-1110, built on Intel® StrongARM* technology, offers industry leading low power operation and performance that allows it to operate at clock speeds of 206MHz. The Intel SA-1110 is already used in a variety of communications market segments including handheld device manufacturers who use the Intel SA-1110 processor to build devices that combine personal management and calendar functions, wireless Internet access and wireless video.
