AUSTIN, TEXAS and LONDON - January 29, 2001 - Metrowerks and Symbian, the leading software platform provider for next generation cell phones, have signed an agreement under which Metrowerks will deliver a complete set of CodeWarrior® software development tools for Symbian. The tools will be geared specifically for third-party product, application and services development for Symbian-based wireless information devices.
"Symbian and Metrowerks are partnering to support the development of products and third-party applications based upon the Symbian platform through the provision of a range of fit-for-purpose integrated development and debugging tools for the Symbian platform," said Colly Myers, CEO, Symbian. "Because CodeWarrior's development environment is tightly integrated, we're enhancing time-to-market for our partners, reducing the cost and effort of developing applications, services and products."
Metrowerks will deliver a range of tools that will enable Symbian's licensees and 35,000 registered independent software vendors to create compelling applications for Symbian-based wireless devices. Manufacturers developing devices based on the Symbian platform include Ericsson, Kenwood, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo and Sony.
"With our successes in the handheld and games markets, Metrowerks is the leading vendor of development tools in the wireless space, and we have a strong track record of growing developer communities," said David Perkins, president and CEO, Metrowerks. "We look forward to helping grow the developer base for Symbian and we're excited about the opportunity to provide Symbian, its licensees and software developers with first-class tools to create innovative applications that take advantage of this unique platform."
"This is a significant agreement. CodeWarrior for Symbian will make it easier for programmers to become skilled at the richness of Symbian programming, which will increase productivity and the quality of the applications developed - in both Java and C++. This agreement will lead to more Symbian developers and more quality applications," commented Charles Davies, Chief Technology Officer, Psion PLC.
The first CodeWarrior products for the Symbian platform will consist of Java development tools, and will feature an entry-level product targeting the Symbian emulator and one targeting Symbian devices. These tools are scheduled to be available in June 2001. Subsequent product releases will include C/C++ support.
Symbian owns, develops and licenses a software platform for next generation mobile phones. Owned by Ericsson, Matsushita (Panasonic), Motorola, Nokia and Psion, Symbian's mission is to license the Symbian platform to all mobile phone manufacturers and to create a mass market for next generation mobile phones by working closely with wireless networks, content, messaging and enterprise wide solution providers.
