CAMBRIDGE, UK and LONDON, UK - July 23, 2001- ARM [(LSE:ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions and Symbian, a leading provider of operating systems for data enabled mobile phones, today announced that Symbian has licensed ARM® Jazelle™ technology software for inclusion in future versions of Symbian OS.
The license agreement with Symbian is the first time that the ARM Jazelle Technology Enabling Kit™ (JTEK™), the Java acceleration software component of ARM Jazelle technology, and the ARM VMA Technology Kit™ (VTK™), have been licensed to an operating system supplier. The move is an important step toward enabling mobile devices to run powerful, interactive Java technology applications, such as graphic intensive games, on-line ticketing, home shopping or banking, with minimal power consumption.
"This agreement makes running Java applications and services on mobile phones a reality by bringing enhanced speed and performance to applications running on Symbian OS and ARM core-based mobile phones," said Mark Edwards, EVP, Sales and Marketing, Symbian. "Symbian and ARM are leading the wireless industry in providing robust and optimized technology solutions. With Java acceleration this will make Symbian OS-based devices an even more attractive target for the 2.5 million Java developers worldwide."
"Symbian is a leading force in the wireless industry, providing an innovative Java technology run-time environment that enables handset OEMs to bring wireless devices to market that deliver enhanced and compelling Java applications to the end user," said Pete Magowan, EVP, Sales and Marketing, ARM.
"Together, Symbian OS and the ARM Jazelle acceleration technology for Java applications, provide the highest performance and lowest power consumption environment for developers targeting the wireless Java environment," said Oliver Gunasekara, Symbian World-Wide Partnership manager, ARM.
ARM Jazelle technology enables devices to execute Java bytecode directly, allowing developers of wireless and Internet devices to build in the capability to run high-performance Java technology applications up to ten times faster, while incurring minimal power and cost overheads.
Symbian will provide its licensees with an OEM Customization Kit (OCK) and Software Development Kit (SDK) that will include both the ARM JTEK and VTK software.
ARM's VTK software technology for Java acceleration will run on any ARM core and can accelerate Java performance by a factor of four. Editions of JTEK and VTK software are available from ARM to target all current Sun embedded Java technologies, J2ME (CDC, CLDC), and PersonalJava.
Symbian supplies an operating system to the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers enabling them to create mobile phones which combine voice communications, wireless Internet access and computing functionality. Ericsson, Nokia and Psion are already shipping Symbian OS based devices. Other companies developing next generation mobile devices on the Symbian OS include Kenwood, Motorola, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sony and Siemens.
ARM is the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions. The company licenses its high-performance, low-cost, power-efficient RISC processors, peripherals, and system-chip designs to leading international electronics companies. ARM also provides comprehensive support required in developing a complete system. ARM's microprocessor cores are rapidly becoming the volume RISC standard in such markets as portable communications, hand-held computing, multimedia digital consumer and embedded solutions.
