Symbian and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. announce 'Symbian Press' publishing imprint

First book on wireless Java for Symbian-based devices to be published September 2001

JavaOne, San Francisco, CA - June 7, 2001 - Symbian and John Wiley & Sons Ltd, a subsidiary of John Wiley & Sons Inc. (NYSE: JWa) (NYSE: JWb), today have announced a partnership to establish the 'Symbian Press' publishing imprint. This agreement will result in a range of definitive books that will further enable rapid development of applications, content and services for Symbian-based devices - such as the Nokia 9290 Communicator device for the Americas market which was announced this week at the JavaOne conference.

"Symbian Press has been established by Symbian, in partnership with Wiley, to communicate authoritative, timely, relevant and practical information about the Symbian OS and related technologies." said David Wood, EVP Technical Consulting, Symbian. "Through the provision of this information we will enable developers to program Symbian-based wireless devices, promoting understanding of open, programmable mobile phones and the technologies that enable them".

Symbian Press is producing an exclusive range of books designed to assist C++, Java, and content developers add value to the unique technologies offered by the Symbian OS. Its goal is to promote the availability of information about Symbian technology to provide accurate, topical and timely high-quality technical literature for the entire wireless market.

The first book in the series, due to be published in September 2001, is 'Wireless Java for Symbian Devices' by Jonathan Allin. Topics covered in the book include:

  • Using the Symbian SDKs;
  • The JavaPhone and Personal Java APIs, and how they are implemented;
  • Writing efficient and optimized code for constrained devices;
  • Understanding and working with Java on Symbian's Communicator reference designs;
  • Creating games;
  • Accessing native functionality through JNI;
  • Creating wireless services.
