Informix Software and Symbian partner to enable enterprise applications for the post-PC wireless age

New Symbian-based solutions offer advanced e-business opportunities for enterprise

LONDON and WESTBORO, Mass. - (BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 2000 - Symbian, the leading software platform provider for Wireless Information Devices (WIDs), today announced that Informix® Software, an independent operating business of Informix Corporation (Nasdaq:IFMX - news), is to become a Symbian Technology Partner. Informix Software also announced that it has ported its Cloudscape™ database to the Symbian platform to help enable enterprise applications for users of Symbian-based smartphones and communicators.

Symbian Technology Partners  program offers leading technology specialists the opportunity to work closely with Symbian in developing enabling technologies and engage in co-marketing campaigns, thus adding value to the Symbian platform. Symbian will also assist Technology Partners in engaging directly with Symbian's licensees, enabling rapid time-to-market for a wide range of WIDs. Symbian's licensees include Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo and Sony.

The Informix Software Java-based Cloudscape technology offers third parties extended options to develop advanced wireless enterprise solutions for the Symbian platform. A key benefit is that users of Symbian-based devices can now have continuous access to their data and corporate applications even when disconnected from the network.

Jim Foy, President, Informix Software, commented, "With our Foundation.2000™ and Cloudscape software, we have the core Web-based database technology to ensure the automatic exchange and synchronization of information across all mobile devices. This technology will make the installation and update of distributed applications seamless to the end user. Our technology powers some of the world's largest networks, and as eCommerce demand rises, we are ideally placed to enable Symbian's third party developers to create more advanced e-commerce solutions for the wireless market than are currently available.''

Colly Myers, CEO, Symbian, commented, "WIDs will soon be one of the primary devices used to access Internet and network information. Businesses are looking for low-risk, safe methods to allow both employees and customers to obtain remote access to information. By working with Informix Software we are addressing these issues and looking ahead to offer new and advanced e-business solutions to the next generation of mobile phones. The partnership we are creating will help to progress the demand for content and services for the wireless data market and provide mobile users with access to relevant information from any location and using any device.''
