Kenwood to develop smartphones based on the Symbian platform

Kenwood joins Ericsson, Matsushita (Panasonic), Motorola, Nokia, Psion, Sanyo, Sony and other industry leaders in adoption of the Symbian platform

COMDEX, Las Vegas & Tokyo, Japan - November 13th 2000 - It was today announced that Kenwood is to develop a range of smartphones based on the Symbian software platform and powered by Intel® XScale™ microarchitecture core. The first devices will be released into the Japanese market with W-CDMA capability during 2002, with plans for other international markets in due course.

"Kenwood have been looking for a software platform that enables them to address the global telecoms market. Only Symbian has delivered the software platform that incorporates the standards, robustness, reliability and flexibility essential for next generation mobile phones." Said Mr. Masakazu Kaneko, Director General Manager, Kenwood. "We're going to be developing a range of innovative multimedia smartphones, based on the Symbian platform and Intel's XScale architecture, that build on our extensive experience in the consumer market."

"As a leading consumer manufacturer in the home audio, mobile phones, and communications systems environment, Kenwood has the history and experience to continue quality innovation in the wireless information technology era." said Mark Edwards, Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Symbian. "With one Symbian-based Smartphone in the market, the Ericsson R380, and others to come next year, Kenwood are extending the list of leading international manufacturers who've chosen to adopt the Symbian platform as the standard for smartphones."

Intel recently announced that it was porting the Symbian platform to its Intel XScale microarchitecture, enabling handset manufacturers to bring Symbian-based devices rapidly to market. The Intel XScale microarchitecture is specifically designed to handle requirements for both ultra-low power and high performance in wireless devices.

Symbian recently held a Developers Expo in London UK where more than 1,200 attendees heard keynotes from leading companies who are supporting the Symbian platform. Ericsson, Nokia, Matsushita (Panasonic) and Sony are all developing Symbian-based smartphones, while Motorola, along with Ericsson, Nokia, Matsushita, Psion and Sanyo are all developing pen and keyboard-based communicators based on the Symbian platform.
