LONDON, United Kingdom (November 3, 2000) - Symbian announces that Thomas Chambers, formerly of First Telecom plc, has today joined Symbian as Chief Financial Officer.
Thomas will manage all aspects of Symbian's financial and operational control, information systems support, and legal counsel. Joining Symbian's operations board, he will report to Colly Myers, CEO, Symbian.
"The appointment of Thomas comes at an important stage for Symbian, where we've delivered version 6 of our software platform, with the first Symbian based Smartphone in the market, and another 20 Wireless Information Devices currently under development." said Colly Myers, CEO, Symbian. "Thomas will add significantly to the operations board and will prepare Symbian for a public flotation - a natural next stage in Symbian's development and key to our continued success."
Thomas brings key contacts and experience in the financial and telecommunications industries. Previously, Thomas was Chief Financial Officer at First Telecom plc prior to its acquisition by Atlantic Telecom plc. Before First Telecom plc, Thomas was the Finance Director of Robert Walters plc at the time of its full market listing in London. Thomas is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants having trained with Price Waterhouse and spent six years within the corporate finance department of Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. He brings 20 years of relevant financial and key management experience in UK blue chip companies including several stock exchange listings, mergers and capital reconstructions. Educated at Wellingborough School and Durham University, he has a BA (Honours) in Economics. He is also an Associate of The Association of Corporate Treasurers (AMCT).
Symbian owns, develops and licenses a software platform for next generation mobile phones. Owned by Ericsson, Matsushita (Panasonic), Motorola, Nokia and Psion, Symbian's mission is to license the Symbian platform to all mobile phone manufacturers and to create a mass market for next generation mobile phones by working closely with wireless networks, content, messaging and enterprise wide solution providers.
Symbian is holding a Developer Expo, focusing on version 6 of its platform, in central London, November 6th-7th. Sponsored by BrainDock, Nokia and Sun Microsystems, attendees can hear keynotes from Colly Myers, CEO Symbian, Hans Snook, CEO Orange and Charles Dunstone, CEO Carphone Warehouse as well as workshops, demos and presentations from other partners.
