Intel and Symbian to provide powerful mobile phone solutions

Intel to port Symbian platform to Intel® XScale™ Microarchitecture

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM CONFERENCE, TOKYO, Japan, Sept. 20, 2000 - Intel Corporation announced today that it is porting the Symbian platform to its Intel® XScale™ microarchitecture. This effort will enable handset manufacturers to bring Symbian-based devices rapidly to market based on the Intel XScale microarchitecture.

The Intel XScale microarchitecture is specifically designed to handle requirements for both ultra-low power and high performance in devices ranging from Internet-ready cell phones to Internet infrastructure equipment. Symbian's software platform combines the simplicity of mobile phones with the features of mobile computing, and has been licensed to companies including Ericsson, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, Philips, Psion, Sanyo and Sony.

"The Symbian platform is gaining rapid acceptance in the wireless industry," said Ron Smith, vice president and general manager for Intel's Wireless Communications and Computing Group. "Coupled with the performance of Intel XScale microarchitecture, future wireless device manufacturers that utilize the Symbian platform can expect a rich user interface, with exciting multimedia performance and longer battery life than products on the market today."

"The Symbian platform enables manufacturers to develop innovative next generation phones based on open wireless standards," said Jeremy Copp, vice president of business relationships for Symbian. "As recently demonstrated, the Intel XScale microarchitecture offers an optimal balance between low power and performance, with incredible multimedia capabilities. Combined, the two provide an ideal solution for future wireless information devices."

About Intel XScale Microarchitecture

The Intel XScale microarchitecture is the next generation in ultra-low-power high-performance processing. Building on Intel® StrongARM* technology, the Intel XScale microarchitecture core is manufactured on Intel's advanced 0.18-micron process technology. It offers low power operation ranging from one ten-thousandth of a watt to 1.6 watts, and performance that allows it to operate at clock speeds approaching 1 GHz. The Intel XScale microarchitecture can be used in a variety of communications market segments including handheld device manufacturers who would use the Intel XScale core to build devices that combine personal management and calendar functions, wireless Internet access and wireless video.
