BEDFORD, Mass., November 16, 1999 – It was today announced that the most trusted name in security has come together with the leading platform provider for wireless information devices to promote the w-commerce industry – the convergence of wireless communications and e-commerce. RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ:RSAS), and Symbian today announced a licensing agreement to incorporate RSA BSAFE® SSL-C security protocol component software into the Symbian platform. By incorporating RSA Security’s technology into its platform, Symbian intends to enable the emerging
w-commerce industry, allowing mobile users access to personal information and business critical data and services in a safe, robust and secure environment.
"Few can doubt the increasingly important role wireless devices of all kinds will play as a means of accessing and benefiting from the Internet and w-commerce," said Scott Schnell, senior vice president of marketing for RSA Security. "Our work with Symbian will help provide the security and confidence users will need for these devices to be successful in the marketplace."
The contract between the two companies licenses RSA’s BSAFE® SSL-C security toolkit in source code form to Symbian, who will integrate it into its reference technology for smartphones and communicators and license the platform to wireless industry device manufacturers.
Since its launch in June 1998 Symbian has been working closely with leaders in the wireless industry to bring together content and devices to enable mobile users. This latest agreement with RSA Security continues Symbian’s mission to grow the industry through a standard platform, and creating new opportunities for companies wishing to develop services using secure wireless web and WAP browsing, email and other w-commerce applications.
"Symbian’s focus on the wireless information device industry has enabled us to license the Symbian platform to the leading mobile computing and telecommunications manufacturers," said Juha Christensen, Executive Vice President, Symbian. "This relationship with RSA Security demonstrates Symbian’s commitment to innovating with leading-edge companies, providing solutions that will ensure a wide variety of smartphones and communicators, and assisting the rapid development of compelling content and services for these devices. Thus the mobile user can be assured that the device they’ll be buying will keep secure their personal information, their business critical data and other transaction and w-commerce based services."
