Emeryville, California, November 10, 1998 - Sybase and Symbian today announced the companies will be demonstrating the industry-leading mobile database solution, Sybase SQL Anywhere and its UltraLite* deployment technology, for next-generation Smartphones powered by Symbian’s EPOC operating system. The companies also announced that Symbian plans to join Sybase’s Mobile and Embedded Computing Business Solutions Alliance Program, which is designed to address the widespread demand for applications tailored to the mobile and embedded computing market. This alliance enables the companies to jointly address emerging enterprise market opportunities for smartphones.

"At Symbian we’re continuing to extend enterprise solutions for EPOC, and this integration with Sybase’s mobile database technology is a further demonstration of the industry’s commitment to working with an industry standard - with EPOC we’re enabling the Wireless Information Device industry," said Simon East, Vice President, Technology at Symbian.
Sybase Mobile and Embedded Computing Division
"Together Sybase and Symbian provide breakthrough technology that will transform smartphones into ‘windows’ to the corporate enterprise," said Terry Stepien, Vice President and General Manager, Sybase’s Mobile and Embedded Computing division. "Sybase defined small ‘fingerprint’ database technology for palmtop devices, two-way pagers and intelligent appliances, and is pleased to join Symbian in driving enterprise applications for smartphones."
The world phone market is projected to grow to more than 600 million users by 2002. With UltraLite, Sybase is poised to extend its leadership role in the mobile market by distributing enterprise information to address this fast-growing market that will deliver a new class of wireless phones. For the first time, organizations will be able to extend critical business applications, such as sales force automation, service and support, and scheduling to smartphones—offering significant productivity and flexibility to mobile users.
Sybase’s UltraLite deployment technology for Adaptive Server Anywhere is the industry’s first application-optimized, ultra-small relational database to reside on smartphones. Organizations can customize the capabilities of the database to match the memory requirements of an application running on the device; the customized database can have a memory "fingerprint" as small as 50K. Two-way server synchronization to any major corporate database allows users to download and upload mission-critical data, ensuring that up-to-date information is available both at their fingertips and at their corporate office.
Sybase’s Mobile and Embedded Computing division is committed to helping organizations realize the promise of "information anywhere." Sybase® SQL Anywhere™ Studio, an integrated product set which includes the company’s market-leading mobile computing database Adaptive Server Anywhere and replication technology, as well as the new Sybase UltraLite database deployment option, enables users to seamlessly synchronize data across the enterprise — from laptops, handheld computing devices and pagers to intelligent appliances.
