Monotype Imaging Launches Guide to Mobile Typography at the Symbian Smartphone Show

White Paper to Guide Developers, Enterprise Organisations and Designers on how to Effectively Use Fonts on Mobile Platforms

LONDON, Symbian Smartphone Show, booth 35, Oct. 9, 2007 – Monotype Imaging, a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has announced the publication of a new white paper entitled “Bringing Typography to Mobile in Symbian OS.” Downloadable from the Symbian Developer Network at http://developer.symbian.com and available to pick up at the Symbian Smartphone Show, the free document details the benefits and challenges of bringing scalable typefaces to mobile devices and offers best practice advice on how to overcome such challenges. Written for mobile developers, enterprise organisations and mobile marketing and advertising designers, the white paper explores how fonts can add quality and distinction to text wherever it is needed in the mobile environment.

“We’re surrounded by typefaces in our everyday lives, yet all too often text on mobile phones looks the same – the type does not look distinctly different whether we’re running an application, game or user interface,” said Chris Roberts, vice president of marketing at Monotype Imaging. “Fonts can create powerful opportunities to differentiate products, deliver more personal, expressive user experiences and create richer, more vibrant graphical environments that are closer to the PC experience. Our white paper describes how fonts used within various mobile scenarios can help achieve these results.”

The white paper covers topics such as using fonts to enhance the user experience in ways that evoke emotion, command attention and make messages more memorable. Three main points surrounding font selection are revealed in a discussion on how to choose the right fonts for a particular project. Other topics include the benefits of scalable fonts over bitmap versions, how technology can be used to overcome unique development challenges as they relate to fonts in the mobile environment, how text is deployed using Symbian OS, and the basics of font licensing. The white paper also discusses why type is important for building and reinforcing brand identity and what should be considered when adapting corporate or brand typefaces for mobile use.

“Global brands should approach mobile communications in such a way that will ensure brand integrity and fidelity,” said Julie Strawson, Monotype Imaging’s director of marketing, Europe. “Companies need to be able to communicate their offerings using the same branded, corporate fonts that are seen in all other media – a consistency that helps build brand strength and customer trust.”

Monotype Imaging is exhibiting its mobile text imaging solution at stand 35 and will be presenting in the Developer ‘Live Lounge’ at the Symbian Smartphone Show, taking place at London’s Excel Centre, Oct. 16-17, 2007.
