The Symbian Smartphone Show, London, UK, 17th October 2006 – Road Angel, the UK’s market leading driver safety system, today launched a mobile phone application that transforms a Symbian smartphone into a driver safety system.
Symbian smartphones are growing in popularity. During H1 2006, Symbian smartphone shipments grew more than 65% compared to H1 2005. According to John Jackson, Director, Wireless/Mobile Technologies, Yankee Group, by 2010, well over 200 million smartphones will be selling worldwide each year, representing 18% of annual global volumes.
Road Angel Mobile enables compatible Symbian smartphones to warn drivers of various hazards that may threaten their safety or driving licence, including fixed and mobile camera positions, average speed monitoring areas, accident blackspots, primary school locations and congestion charging zones. Whenever a potential hazard is encountered Road Angel Mobile provides visible and audible alerts to ensure the driver’s attention stays focused on the road.
Road Angel Mobile runs on most Nokia handsets using Nokia S60 2nd Edition and was developed through a commercial relationship with Intrinsyc Software, specialists in Symbian Software Development. Details of compatible phones are given on www.roadangelmobile.com. In addition, to provide the application with the satellite signal needed to calculate their position, drivers need to use a suitable Bluetooth GPS receiver, such as the Holux GPSlim 236 and GR230.
In a special offer lasting until 31 October 2006 Road Angel Mobile may be downloaded for free. During this period users will also pay a special low rate on their data subscription, which will be charged at £1.50 each fortnight (the equivalent of only 75 pence per week).
The subscription covers the user’s access to the Road Angel database, which is constantly updated to provide the most comprehensive and accurate warnings of hazardous locations. Subscriptions are conveniently charged directly to the handset and are automatically renewed each week, although they may be cancelled by the user at any time.
After the offer period, each registration and download of Road Angel Mobile will cost £5.00 and the £1.50 data subscription will be charged on a weekly basis.

Steve Salmon, chief executive of Road Angel Group, commented, “The mobile phone has become an invaluable companion in most walks of life and Road Angel Mobile extends its potential still further. By keeping drivers aware of approaching hazards, the application helps preserve both their physical safety and the state of their driving licence.”
