NEW YORK, Feb. 9, 2006 -- On2 Technologies, Inc. (Amex: ONT) today announced it has joined the Symbian Platinum Partner Program to elevate the visibility of, and accessibility to, On2 Technologies' industry-leading VP7 video compression technology for development within the Symbian OS(TM) platform. Symbian develops and licenses Symbian OS, the operating system that powers today's most popular smart phones, with almost 48 million phones based on Symbian OS having shipped worldwide.
Symbian OS phones are growing in popularity. As of Q3 2005, Symbian OS phone shipments grew more than 131% compared to the same quarter last year. According to technology analyst firm Canalys, overall global shipments of smartphones are up 183% year on year in Q3 2005 with Symbian emerging as the market leader.
As part of the Platinum Partner Program, partner's benefit from a range of commercial services, including technical support and joint marketing opportunities, as well as privileged access to Symbian OS source code. These benefits are key to the rapid development and adoption of high quality VP7-enabled video streaming solutions and the delivery to smart phones via the ubiquitous Symbian OS.
