Symbian to License WLAN Software from TapRoot Systems for Future Releases of the OS Platform

Broad technology agreement reduces the risk and costs associated with developing WLAN enabled Symbian OS smartphones

LONDON, UK – June 6th, 2005 – TapRoot Systems Inc and Symbian Ltd. today announced that Symbian has licensed TapRoot Systems’ WLAN 802.11 networking software for inclusion in future releases of Symbian OS.  The sublicensing of TapRoot’s WLAN networking software will provide Symbian OS™ licensees with standard 802.11 capabilities suitable for integration into Symbian OS phone designs. Symbian OS is the market leading open mobile operating system for advanced mobile phones, also known as smartphones, and is licensed to the world’s leading handset manufacturers.

The scope of the agreement is a long term technology sub-licensing and support contract covering WLAN development for future versions of Symbian OS. TapRoot will continue to develop the product and keep it current with upcoming versions of Symbian OS. TapRoot will also offer additional feature packs and integration services directly to Symbian licensees to reduce risk and speed the time to market for handset developments.

“As part of TapRoot’s ongoing product development strategy, we believe the core of our 802.11 technology belongs in the Symbian platform for the benefit of its licensees,” said Hugh Thomas, CEO, TapRoot Systems.  "The entire community benefits by keeping Symbian OS up to date with the latest features and keeps it the most competitive smartphone OS in the world. TapRoot will also offer additional WLAN related feature packs and integration services directly to Symbian OS licensees to reduce risk and speed the time to market for handset developments. "

TapRoot Systems was the first member of the Symbian Platinum Program and has contributed software to the Symbian eco-system for over four years.  This second licensing agreement between TapRoot and Symbian further strengthens the close relationship between the two companies. TapRoot previously announced a telephony license agreement with Symbian in 2003 which established TapRoot’s position in the market place as a leading provider of innovative technology for Symbian OS.

Symbian ltd.
“Symbian believes that 802.11 will be integral to creating and enhancing value in the next generation of smartphones,” said Stephen Evans, VP Core Development, Symbian.” We surveyed the market and decided TapRoot not only has one of the most mature and proven 802.11 software product offering but the company also has considerable in depth 802.11 domain expertise and is best placed to keep this offering up to date with the evolving 802.11 industry.
