Course overview

For existing Symbian OS application developers, system and porting engineers, wishing to gain an insight into the new real-time Symbian OS kernel (EKA2) as introduced in Symbian OS v8.0. This course focuses on the differences between the existing and new kernel using the course structure of the Operating System Internal (OSI) course as its baseline. Like the OSI course it is of particular interest to Device Driver writers and Base Porting team members as the content is very much focused on kernel issues. It is also likely to be of interest to more experienced Symbian OS developers working on user side components.

Objective

This course is aimed at engineers making or about to make the transition to working on a version of Symbian OS that uses EKA2. Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

appreciate the implications of the new kernel architecture on the design and implementation of device drivers
identify areas of user side code that may require reworking for EKA2
commence/complete a EKA2 base porting task in a more expedient manner.

Pre-requisites

The course is designed for engineers with a good understanding of EKA1 (the kernel used in Symbian OS v6.1, 7.0, 7.0s, 8.0a). Participation in the Symbian OS Internals course, or equivalent knowledge, is assumed. The course does examine a small number of code fragments and these are written in C++.

Style

The course consists of a series of presentations and discussions. (although small practical exercises can be undertaken when appropriate hardware/software is available).

A look at how the EKA2 kernel components are structured and their underlying file hierarchy.

An introduction to the simplified base porting process.

What issues are developers working on user side code potentially going to face as they port their code to EKA2 based versions of Symbian OS.
Device Drivers
Key differences between EKA1 and EKA2 and new features that affect the design/implementation of driver code.
