Nigel Clifford joined Symbian in June 2005. Symbian leads the smartphone OS category and has grown its share of the overall mobile market from 5% in 2006 to 7% in 2007, with a cumulative total Symbian smartphone shipment figure of over 188 million to date. Clifford has extended the Company's global activities in the UK, China, India and Japan. Clifford joined Symbian from Tertio Telecoms, a profitable telecommunications software organisation where he was CEO, working with private equity groups Apax Partners and Advent International to build and eventually sell the company. Prior to this, he headed up Cable and Wireless UK operations and was CEO of Glasgow Royal Infirmary University NHS Trust, one of the largest health providers in the UK between 1992-1998. He started his career with BT, holding a number of management roles, including business strategy and development with BT Mobile. Clifford is a graduate of Cambridge University and holds an MBA from Strathclyde University.
Thomas Chambers joined Symbian in November 2000 from First Telecom where he was also CFO. Prior to this he was Finance Director of Robert Walters and spent six years in corporate finance at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Chambers brings 20 years of financial and management experience including several stock exchange listings, mergers and capital reconstructions. A graduate of Durham University, he is also an Associate of The Association of Corporate Treasurers.
Charles Davies became CTO of Symbian in March 2003, after a long career at Psion as a software technologist and as a Director since 1982. Davies has been an industry technology pioneer in handheld computer software and a lead contributor to many of the architectural concepts underpinning Symbian OS. At Psion, he worked with Symbian as shareholder, licensee, Technology Committee member and application developer. As CTO he provides technology leadership at the executive level, contributes heavily to Symbian's business, product and technology strategies and is the executive sponsor of Symbian's Technology Committee. Davies holds a PhD and first class degree in Physics from Imperial College, London.
As EVP of Marketing, Behrens oversees product planning and corporate strategy. He leads the company’s drive to bring Symbian smartphones into a higher-volume, lower-cost market and promotes the ecosystem for customers, partners, network operators and developers worldwide. Behrens manages the expansion of the Symbian OS v9 product family and his team was responsible for the world's top five handset vendors announcing smartphones based on Symbian OS v9. He also cultivates strategic partnerships in the development of 3G reference designs as part of Symbian’s initial steps in taking Symbian OS into the mass market. Behrens joined Symbian in 2003 with ten years’ prior experience as a strategy consultant in the mobile industry and holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands.
As EVP of Sales & Professional Services, Brannan leads Symbian’s sales and professional services teams, oversees Japanese operations, network operator relationships and technical support for licensees and semiconductor partners. Brannan joined Symbian in 2001 and has since headed successful campaigns to secure Symbian OS licenses to major handset vendors around the world, resulting in excess of 100 smartphone design wins. Prior to joining Symbian, Brannan spent eight years at Hewlett Packard and five years at Diamond Multimedia Inc., latterly S3 Inc. He led Sales and Marketing teams at both companies to secure substantial international market penetration, with achievements ranging from high-value OEM supply contracts to establishing the European retail distribution of the first ever MP3 player, the Diamond Rio.
David Wood joined Psion as a software engineer in June 1988, and gradually moved into roles involving software architecture and system integration. He was an early adopter of object-oriented technology within Psion in the late 1980s and saw this come to fruition in popular handheld devices such as the Series 3 and Series 3a. From 1994 to 1997 he oversaw the development of the upper layers of the software system that eventually became known as Symbian OS. He was a founding director of Symbian on its formation in 1998. From 1998 to 2002 he headed Symbian's Technical Consulting department, building and directing teams that worked with Symbian's customers to create the world's first smartphones. From 2002 to 2004 he was EVP of Partnering at Symbian, creating partner programs to foster sustained commercial success for companies in the Symbian ecosystem. As EVP of Research, David is now responsible for understanding and guiding Symbian's response to disruptive trends in technology, business, and society. David has an MA in Mathematics from Cambridge University and an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Westminster.
Richard Lowther joined Symbian in January 2007 from Dell where he was Human Resources Director for their UK & Ireland business and for Dell's Corporate Functions across EMEA. Prior to Dell, he worked at The Oracle Corporate for 10 years where he held a number of senior level appointments including Human Resources Director for UK & South Africa and Human Resources Director for Eastern Central Europe, Middle East & Africa. Richard is responsible for all aspects of Human Resources across Symbian. A graduate of ENPC School of International Management in Paris he has an executive MBA and a Diploma in International Business from University of Edinburgh Business School. He has completed several management & professional programmes at a number of business schools including Oxford University Business School and at IMD, Switzerland.
Per Selbekk joined Symbian as EVP of Software Engineering in November 2007. He is responsible for the development of Symbian OS and its related toolkits. Prior to joining Symbian, Selbekk was an independent industry consultant advising world-leading telecommunication companies on next generation network rollout projects, large offshore outsourcing programs and development methodologies. Selbekk previously served as IT Development Director at mobile operator 3 in the UK where he played a key role in the company’s launch phase. He was involved in creating a new IT infrastructure, deploying 3G products and services. Selbekk has also held European CIO roles for telecommunication providers Carrier1 and UUnet (now part of Verizon) as well as other positions in management consulting. He holds a business degree from Oslo Business School and a MIM from Thunderbird, American Graduate School of International Management.
Sir Peter has held senior positions in high technology industries and in government. As chief executive officer of the United Kingdom’s Office of Government Commerce, he led a major programme to reform government procurement, saving some £1.65 billion by implementing measures aimed at improving value for money. In 2004 he has also completed a review of efficiency of the UK public sector which resulted in the Government launching a major programme based on his recommendations. Sir Peter has extensive experience in the IT and telecoms industries, working in ICL, STC Telecommunications, GPT (telecoms joint venture between Siemens AG and GEC plc) and GEC Marconi. Sir Peter was chief operating officer and Board member of BAE Systems from 1999 until his appointment to the Office of Government Commerce in 2000. Peter is a member of the governing body of Imperial College and has fellowships of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Electrical Engineers. He is also non-executive Chairman (from 1st March 2005) of Premier Farnell plc. He was awarded the CBE in 2000 for services to UK Industry and was knighted in 2004 for his work on public sector procurement.
The Board of Symbian is today pleased to announce the appointment of Nigel Clifford to the post of Chief Executive Officer. Mr Clifford will take up his position in June 2005.
